چکیده

Differential interferogram images derived from repeat-pass spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems give the possibility to map surface deformations of small spatial extent and to monitor their spatiotemporal evolution. A slow and local phenomenon of subsidence caused by underground coal mining has been observed near Gardanne, France, from images acquired by both European ERS-1/2 satellites between 1992 and 1995. Interferometric monitoring revealed the migration of the subsidence halo caused by the advance of the coal working face. Comparison with field leveling data has shown that the amount of effective land subsidence is similar. The analysis and interpretation of the observed movements take into account the structural characteristics of the sedimentary basin, the micro-seismic activity of the region and the geometry of the underground workings. Such an application of SAR interferometry, under normal conditions of observation and at different periods, opens up wide application prospects, not only for research goal but also for industrial use.

Mine Subsidence Monitoring by JERS-1 SAR Interferometry

Differential SAR Interferometry (D-InSAR) is an effective tool in monitoring land subsidence because of its greater coverage area and better resolution of height change. A series of Japanese Earth Resources Satallite-1 (JERS-1) images from 1992 to 1998 has been used in monitoring the mine subsidence in the test site of this study, one of the important coal mining areas in China. D-InSAR procedu...

Ground Subsidence Monitored by L-band Satellite Radar Interferometry

Ground subsidence can be caused by both natural and human-induced activities. In this paper, a radar remote sensing technique named Differential Interferometric SAR (D-InSAR) is introduced as means of monitoring the ground deformation caused by mining activities. D-InSAR and current geodetic technologies, such as GPS, are complementary in monitoring ground subsidence due to underground mining a...

Study of subsidence of Abarkooh plain of Yazd using the Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry method

Abstract The population growth, the development of cities, industry, agriculture, and improper use of resources especially non-renewable resources have led human beings to face the danger of running out of resources. In some cases, in addition to the above, irreversible environmental and geological hazards have occurred due to the overdrawn of resources. Over extraction of groundwater resourc...

Monitoring Terrain Deformations at Phlegrean Fields with SAR Interferometry

The terrain deformations in the Neapolitan area of the Phlegrean Fields have been studied by means of SAR interferometry (INSAR). The area, located near Mt.Vesuvius, is subject to strong volcanic activity, as testified by the continuous alternation of phases of strong uplift with periods of slow subsidence. Since 1985 the area is undergoing subsidence. A set of interferograms from ERS data has ...
